The George Zimmerman murder case in Florida focused attention on the state's controversial 'stand-your-ground' law. Critics want to repeal such laws, but that seems unlikely. At least 22 states have 'stand-your-ground' laws.

Mr. Zimmerman?s legal team did not use ?stand your ground? as part of its successful defense against murder and manslaughter charges. But the judge cited the law, chapter and verse, in her instructions to the six-woman jury that set Zimmerman free.

Now, ?stand your ground? is the focus of political and public debate ? featuring elements of gun control, race relations, and criminal justice ? over how to act in ways that prevent such deadly violence.

More than 100 cities and towns across the country held ?Justice for Trayvon? rallies Saturday at which ?stand your ground? was a featured issue.

?We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again,? civil rights activist and MSNBC host Al Sharpton told the crowd in New York.

Speaking earlier in the week to a NAACP convention in Orlando, US Attorney General Eric Holder said, "It's time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense and sow dangerous conflict in our neighborhoods,? an obvious reference to ?stand your ground? laws.

In his unusual comments on race to reporters in the White House press room Friday, President Obama was more explicit.

?If we're sending a message as a society in our communities that someone who is armed potentially has the right to use those firearms even if there's a way for them to exit from a situation, is that really going to be contributing to the kind of peace and security and order that we'd like to see?? he asked.

In the Zimmerman case, the President continued: ?If Trayvon Martin was of age and armed, could he have stood his ground on that sidewalk??And do we actually think that he would have been justified in shooting Mr. Zimmerman who had followed him in a car because he felt threatened??And if the answer to that question is at least ambiguous, then it seems to me that we might want to examine those kinds of laws.?

Speaking on CNN Sunday, Sen. John McCain (R) of Arizona said a review of what he called such ?very controversial legislation? would be appropriate.

After its August recess, a Senate judiciary subcommittee will hold a hearing on ?stand your ground? laws, chairman Dick Durbin (D) of Illinois said Friday.

The?Senate Judiciary Committee subcommittee on Constitution, civil rights and human rights??will examine the gun lobby?s and the American Legislative Exchange Council?s influence in creating and promoting these laws; the way in which the laws have changed the legal definition of self-defense; the extent to which the laws have encouraged unnecessary shooting confrontations; and the civil rights implications when racial profiling and ?stand your ground? laws mix, along with other issues,? Sen. Durbin said in a statement.

Motorola Droid Ultra Limited Edition leaks, touts a go-faster racing stripe

If you think a red version of the rumored Droid Ultra just wouldn't be special enough, you're in luck. Frequent Motorola device leaker Houdabao claims to have photos of a Limited Edition model that would include a wrap-around racing stripe, much like a decked out muscle car. Unfortunately, there isn't much more to share. While Houdabao echoes talk of the Droid Ultra sporting a 5-inch LCD and a 6mm thick body, he doesn't outline the Limited Edition's full feature set. There's also no mention of its intended audience -- it may be only for Verizon staff, like the red Droid RAZR. Should the special-run Droid Ultra reach the public, though, there's a chance we'll learn more about it tomorrow. Check out a second photo of the Limited Edition after the break.

Officials: Zimmerman helped 4 out of wrecked SUV

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? George Zimmerman helped rescue four people from an overturned vehicle in central Florida last week, just days after he was cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, officials said Monday.

Seminole County Sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said in a statement that deputies responding last Wednesday afternoon to the wreck in Sanford ? the Orlando suburb where Martin was shot ? found Zimmerman and another man had already helped a couple and their two children out of a flipped SUV off the road near Interstate 4. They were not hurt.

Zimmerman spoke with a deputy at the scene and then left, the sheriff's office statement said. He did not see the crash happen.

This is believed to be the first time Zimmerman, 29, has been seen publicly since his acquittal on a second-degree murder charge in the 17-year-old Martin's death in February 2012. Zimmerman's parents and his attorneys have said in interviews since the verdict that they fear for his safety because of those who may not agree with it.

A message left at the office of Zimmerman attorney Mark O'Mara was not immediately returned Monday.

Robert Zimmerman, Jr. on Monday posted on his Twitter account about his brother's actions: "George saw a need, he acted. Our parents taught us to help, never to boast. Humility is George's finest trait."

Martin's shooting death spurred debate across the U.S. over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Protesters nationwide lashed out against police in Sanford because it took 44 days for Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, to be arrested last year. Many, including Martin's parents, said Zimmerman had racially profiled the unarmed black teen. Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, said he acted in self-defense during a fight with Martin.

Six female jurors, whose names have not been released, considered nearly three weeks of often wildly conflicting testimony over who was the aggressor on the rainy night Martin was shot while walking through the gated townhouse community where he was staying and where Zimmerman lived.

The acquittal prompted rallies nationwide in the days afterward calling for a civil rights investigation and federal charges against Zimmerman.

It also led to a sit-in at Florida Gov. Rick Scott's office demanding that legislators repeal the state's stand-your-ground self-defense law. The law, passed in 2005, generally eliminated a person's duty to retreat in the face of a serious physical threat. At least 21 states have a self-defense law similar to Florida's.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In the first 200 years of the republic, just three presidents survived more than two decades after leaving office John Adams, Martin Van Buren and Herbert Hoover. The odds for ex-presidents have improved considerably since then.

Jimmy Carter, who raised the bar for active post-presidential years, is 88 now, and 32 years out of office. No one has survived longer after leaving the White House. George H.W. Bush, 89, passed the two-decade mark this year. The two most recent former presidents, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both are going strong. Gerald Ford lived nearly 30 years after leaving office.

There's a lot happening in the ex-presidents club these days ? thanks to increasing longevity, the personalities of the current members and expanding opportunities for influence.

After a relatively quiet start to his post-presidency, George W. Bush in recent weeks has made headlines by speaking out for immigration reform and popping up in Africa at a wreath-laying with President Barack Obama to remember victims of terrorism. Clinton, with his philanthropic work and a wife who's a potential presidential candidate, is never far from the news.

The elder Bush, although frail, was at the White House last week (in jaunty red-and-white striped socks) for a ceremony promoting the volunteerism program he started as president. And Carter, noted for his years of globe-trotting work to advance human rights, spoke out last week against "legal bribery of candidates" at home in the form of unchecked political contributions by outside groups.

Is all this activity the new model for ex-presidents? It turns out they've got plenty of examples to draw on from earlier centuries.

"There's a whole class of people who leave the White House and continue to take a hyperactive role in American life," says presidential historian Douglas Brinkley of Rice University. He points to Andrew Johnson, who was elected to the Senate after a presidency that included impeachment; William Howard Taft, who became a Supreme Court justice; John Quincy Adams, who was an outspoken opponent of slavery as a member of the House; Theodore Roosevelt, who created the Bull Moose Party and tried to regain the presidency, and many more.

"There is no rule of thumb," says Brinkley. "Each man is just different."

For all their differences, though, recent chief executives have tended to start their post-presidential years relatively quietly, taking time to regroup, to heal in some cases, and give the new guy space to operate. They focus on raising money for their presidential libraries/centers. They write memoirs. Their poll numbers improve as time passes and memories of hard-fought presidential battles soften.

Call that phase one.

Bush, whose presidential center in Dallas was dedicated in April and whose 2010 memoir, "Decision Points," was a best-seller, has seen his poll numbers rebound, and he seems to be entering phase two: He says he wants to make a difference in the world, but steer clear of politics and avoid meddling in Obama's business.

His recent activities have demonstrated both the possibilities and limitations of an ex-president's influence.

Bush's presence in Africa during Obama's visit to the continent offered a reminder of his efforts to fight HIV and AIDS there. But his entreaty to bring a "benevolent spirit" to the debate over immigration reform seemed to have zero impact on House Republicans. GOP legislators said Bush's comments never even came up in their closed-door meeting about immigration on the day he spoke out.

"We care what people back home say, not what some former president says," said Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan.

Still, recent ex-presidents seem to be assuming a higher profile in public affairs and politics, says Thomas F. Schaller, a political scientist at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County who has written a study of postmodern ex-presidents.

"The opportunities are greater," says Schaller, pointing to the bigger role of electronic media, the globalization of politics and the tendency of ex-presidents to work more cooperatively with one another and with the current occupant of the White House.

After Clinton and the elder Bush worked closely on humanitarian aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Indonesia, Clinton quipped, "People began to joke that I was getting so close to the Bush family, I had become the black sheep son."

A number of earlier ex-presidents also played on the global stage ? but with a smaller megaphone.

Herbert Hoover, who lived nearly 32 years after his presidency, traveled the world and took on significant relief efforts in Europe during and after World War II. He later served on government reform commissions during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, and declared he had "outlived the bastards" who blamed him for the Great Depression, according to Schaller.

Brinkley says Carter, who left office with disastrous job approval ratings, "game-changed" the ex-president's role with his vigorous public policy activity and freelance diplomacy.

The joke is that Carter, who left office in 1981, used the presidency as a stepping stone to his ex-presidency. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Clinton, with his foundation work, seems intent on following Carter's model, although the two have had prickly relations over the years, in part because of Carter's unbidden forays into diplomacy while Clinton was president and his criticism during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Obama will exit the White House at age 54, some 15 years younger than when Ronald Reagan took office. He'll soon need to consider how his next act will play out over what most likely will be decades.

"Who wants to think their better days are behind them when you're in your mid-50s?" asks Brinkley. "You try to say, 'How can I make a bigger impact?' You're seeing Clinton do that, and you'll see George W. Bush do it, but in his own Texas-style way."

At his library dedication, the younger Bush related that Alexander Hamilton had once worried about ex-presidents "wandering among the people like discontented ghosts."

"Actually," he added, "I think we seem pretty happy."

Obama to meet with pro-White House outside group

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is meeting Monday with his most loyal supporters to discuss ways to promote his agenda on issues like immigration reform and the economy as lawmakers prepare to return home for their annual summer break.

Obama was being joined by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California at a meeting of Organizing for Action, a non-profit formed from the president's 2012 re-election campaign.

The meeting comes ahead of Congress' annual August recess, when many lawmakers return to their districts and hold town hall meetings with constituents. It was during the same period in 2009 that many tea party activists rallied against Obama's health care proposal, which the White House is now working to implement.

Democrats are trying to build momentum on issues like immigration reform, which cleared the Senate but faces an uncertain future in the House; expanded background checks for certain firearm purchases, which are stalled in Congress; and measures to curb climate change, which the president outlined last month.

Obama also plans a series of economic speeches beginning this week that will be aimed at building support ahead of upcoming budget deadlines this fall and the potential for another fight with Republicans over the nation's borrowing limit.

Organizing for Action, which is run by former White House and campaign aides, has tried to build public pressure on members of Congress to enact the president's second-term agenda. The group raised more than $8 million between April and June.

Attendees at an "Action August" summit were receiving an update from Reid and Pelosi at the meeting, along with news from Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which has been active in opposing sweeping new abortion restrictions in Texas.

Obama was scheduled to speak at the summit and then at a dinner for the organization later in the evening.
