tiki lights - Tiki Lights -- The Easy and Affordable Outdoor Lighting ...

When the evenings are hot and you would like to sit outside on your patio to breathe the cool air, adding many tiki lights can bring an unusual, authentic feel which is able to assist you relax and picture an exceeding ambiance of a tropical paradise. These outside lighting is easy to use and maintain and are comparatively cheaper depending on the fashion you opt to shop for. There are lots of items you will need to understand regarding owning and using tiki lights.

Firstly, invariably keep in mind that tiki lights, regardless of how ornamental and delightful they are, they can have real flames if they are not solar-powered. Make sure that you simply keep the tikis far from any nearby flammable materials and invariably keep kids and pets at a secure distance. Make sure that the tiki pole is firmly hooked up to the bottom or thuslidly driven into the ground.

Secondly, purchase a sensible quality lamp oil to be used for the tikis I once bought the most costly effective oil on the shelf at the native store and it smoked horribly. Everything anywhere close to the torch become coated in an exceedingly disgusting black soot that was a true problem to scrub. I like to recommend obtaining a coffee smoke or no-smoke oil since you will be sitting close to the flames and possibly don't need to be enhale the nasty black smoke all night. These higher oils can price slightly additional, however I feel they're price each penny.

In addition to obtaining sensible quality oil, you will need to think about obtaining a citronella scented oil for your tiki lights. The addition of citronella can flip your tiki torches into practical mosquito repellents. They're going to not perform miracles because the citronella is comparatively gentle and natural, however each bit helps when it involves keeping those hungry mosquitoes away.

On the other hand, most tiki torches can keep company with a wick after you purchase them. Make certain that the units you get have the wicks as a result of the torch is useless while not it. The wick absorbs the oil within the bowl and makes it out there for the flame to consume. If you've got sturdy metal torch bodies, you will got to replace the wick periodically reckoning on the standard and whether or not it's exposed to harsh atmospheric condition or not. I've never had a bamboo torch last long enough that I had to exchange the wick, thus if you are using that vogue, you may most likely simply get a replacement with the new torches after you upgrade.

When you are positioning the wick, make sure that you do not have an excessive amount of exposed. You would like barely enough wick out there for the flame to light-weight and burn nicely. Prepare it in order that regarding 1 and 1/2 inches of exposed and alter as necessary. Fill the oil bowl regarding 3 quarters full and install it into the torch holder. When you are beginning a brand new torch for the primary time, you will got to drip some oil onto the wick from the highest and let it soak down so as to assist the oil get absorbed. Once the wick is soaked with the oil, you will not got to try this once more.

As you'll see, tiki torches and tiki lights are easy and simple to maintain and to take care of. They need only a few further things to use and maintenance is minimal. Once you illuminate your patio with many tiki torches for the primary time, you will be amazed at simply how relaxing the lighting experience is and the mesmerizing dancing flames.

Investors snap up bonds on economic fears

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yields on U.S. and European debt fell to record lows on Friday and stock markets plunged after a weak U.S. jobs report aggravated fear of a global slump and sent investors scurrying for safety.

The data, which showed U.S. job growth at its weakest in a year, underscored a growing sense that the U.S. economy is not immune to a slowdown in Europe where Spain is struggling to support its banks or to China's slackening economic demand.

U.S. and European stock indexes fell sharply. The blue-chip Dow average and FTSEurofirst 300 index of European shares erased their gains for the year.

Crude oil hit a 16-month low of less than $98 per barrel.

Poor Chinese manufacturing data and dismal European reports on factory activity added to the anxiety, propelling safe-haven gold to its biggest one-day rally in more than three years.

"I don't think we were ever out of the woods, but people got very optimistic earlier this year. Now, reality is setting back in," said Joshua Shapiro, chief U.S. economist at MFR, a global consulting firm. "Globally, we've got a tough road ahead."

John Kilduff, a partner at New York-based investment manager Again Capital, added: "From China to Europe to the U.S., all the data have shown real slowing."

The gloomy outlook sparked talk of more emergency measures from major central banks, which have tried to boost growth in recent years by slashing interest rates to almost zero and boosting cheap credit to banks.

"The time has probably come for some new government action in the U.S., Europe and China," said Rick Meckler, president of hedge fund LibertyView Capital Management LLC in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"The hope for U.S. investors," he said, "had been that the U.S. economy at least could continue its growth even as Europe was declining."

The possibility of new Federal Reserve bond purchases pushed the dollar down against the euro, although Europe's crisis limited the single currency's gains. It last traded up 0.6 percent at $1.2429 after dipping below $1.23 earlier.

German Bund futures hit a record high of 146.89, up 86 ticks on the day, and yields on German 10-year bonds fell as low as 1.127 percent. Two-year yields on German debt dipped below zero for the first time, falling to -0.001 percent.

Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes rose as much as 1-4/32 in price to yield 1.442 percent, the lowest on records that date to the early 1800s, according to Reuters data.

British government borrowing costs sank to record lows across the full range of maturities.

Some questioned the wisdom of buying bonds that on an inflation-adjusted basis are already providing negative returns. The coupon on German and U.S. 10-year government debt is 1.75 percent - below the rate of inflation.

"It's starting to get a little ridiculous. The bond market is just insane, insane. People have lost their mind," said Stephen Massocca, managing director at Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco.

Dan Fuss, vice chairman and a portfolio manager at Loomis Sayles, said global growth was clearly slowing, but the price on government debt had gotten out of hand.

"Treasuries are vastly overpriced and getting more so. If the Fed engages in another round of quantitative easing, they won't call it that," Fuss said.

But the appetite for riskier assets was in short supply.

MSCI's all-country world equity index fell 1.9 percent, while the FTSEurofirst 300 closed down 1.9 percent at 954.874, wiping out this year's gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 274.88 points, or 2.22 percent, to end at 12,118.57. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 32.29 points, or 2.46 percent, to finish at 1,278.04. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 79.86 points, or 2.82 percent, to close at 2,747.48.

Copper sank to its lowest level this year on global growth concerns, and market measures of investor anxiety spiked. The CBOE Volatility index jumped 10.2 percent and the Euro STOXX 50 volatility index rose 4.1 percent.

"I highly doubt the selling will abate today, especially with all the European turmoil going on" said Tom Donino, co-head of trading at First New York Securities.

Gold shot up more than 4 percent at one point on speculation U.S. authorities could unveil another round of monetary easing to boost growth.

Spot gold rose to a high of $1,629.41, before paring some gains. U.S. gold futures for August delivery settled up $57.90 at $1,620.50 an ounce.

Brent crude oil futures tumbled to their lowest since February 2011 to an intra-day low of $97.70, before settling down $3.44 at $98.43.

U.S. July crude fell $3.30 to settle at $83.23 a barrel, its lowest settlement since October 7.

Both Brent and U.S. crude posted their heaviest monthly losses in May since the late 2008 downturn.

The benchmark Thomson Reuters-Jefferies CRB index, a global commodities benchmark, fell 1.7 percent, after a decline of almost 11 percent in May, the second-largest monthly decline since 2008.

A Separate Peace

Dear Prudie,
After a pretty brutal year with more than 120 days in the hospital fighting a bone cancer (among other things), my condition has gotten worse. My doctor agrees with letting me stop all treatments, except things to help with pain and discomfort. I'm left with a few weeks to perhaps two years to live. I'm in my 40s, and my child is grown and doing well. While I'd like to see future grandchildren and do much more, I'm at peace. I am making the most of my time, and sharing the joy I have each day. Without the medical treatments, I experience much less nausea and pain, and I have a good quality of life for at least a short time. My family and friends, however, are not taking it so well. I hear general admonishments that I shouldn't give up, to suggestions I seek a third and fourth opinion, to assertions I should have a bone marrow transplant (a rough procedure I would only have a 20 percent chance of surviving). What can I say to people who love me, to reassure them that it really is OK? I don't want to spend the time I have left defending my choice to not be a hospitalized human pin cushion.

George Zimmerman back to jail for 'falsehoods.' Will they influence trial?

The judge in the Trayvon Martin case revoked George Zimmerman's bond and ordered him to jail after prosecutors showed he had lied about his personal finances during his bond hearing.

After seeing public opinion gradually swing his way over the events of Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., George Zimmerman?s already tentative credibility took a hit as Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester ordered him back to jail for lying at his bond hearing in late April.

Accused of murdering unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin, Mr. Zimmerman had posted a $150,000 bond in April after declaring, through his lawyer, that he was out of work and basically indigent. His parents, too, said they had little money.

But a few days later, Mark O?Mara, Zimmerman?s attorney, told Judge Lester that Zimmerman?s financial situation wasn?t as dire, as he had raised nearly $200,000 through his ?The Real George Zimmerman? website.

While Mr. O?Mara pointed to the discrepancy as an innocent mistake, prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda pounced on the misdirection on Friday, saying it ? together with Zimmerman?s failure to tell the court about a second passport in his possession ? was evidence that he deserves to await trial in a jail cell.

?I don?t know what other words to use [about how much money Zimmerman had] besides that it was a blatant lie,? Mr. De La Rionda said.

O?Mara on Friday argued there was ?no deceit? involved since the pair did not use the money for anything.

In revoking the bond, Judge Lester said Zimmerman, who is currently in hiding, shouldn?t be able to benefit from ?material falsehoods.? The judge also immediately placed Zimmerman under a ?no bond? status, meaning he?ll likely spend the rest of his time awaiting trial in a Seminole County jail cell.? The judge gave Zimmerman 48 hours to report to jail.

As prosecutors released nearly all their evidence in the case to the public last month, it increasingly appeared like Zimmerman?s original statement ? that he shot Trayvon after fearing for his life as the boy pummeled him ? had credence. Medical statements showed he had a broken nose and cuts on the back of his head, and several witnesses corroborated that Zimmerman was on the receiving end of a beating after getting out of his car to follow Trayvon.

Prosecutors say Zimmerman is culpable because he ?profiled? the boy as a criminal, ignored a dispatcher?s warning about following Trayvon, and then ?confronted? him. While the state?s Stand Your Ground law allows people to defend themselves with lethal force in public areas, it does not protect those who instigate a fight.

Some legal experts, including Harvard?s Alan Dershowitz, have accused chief prosecutor Angela Corey of folding under public pressure to charge Zimmerman with second degree murder, arguing there?s not enough evidence to support the charges. It?s a notion Ms. Corey has denied.

But having the judge in essence calling Zimmerman a liar before he even has a chance to take the stand in his defense may dramatically change the tenor and perception of the case by boosting the prosecution?s contention that Zimmerman is not a trustworthy person. Because Zimmerman is the only living witness to the exact events of that night, a jury will have to weigh his credibility as he defends himself against a crime that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

During the hearing, prosecutors introduced several recordings of telephone conversations between Zimmerman and his wife, Shellie, made while he was in jail.? In one such recording, they can be heard speaking cryptically about a second passport in his possession. Zimmerman was ordered by the judge to hand over his passport so he couldn?t flee the country, but Zimmerman applied for a second passport after the shooting, saying his first one had been stolen.

In other recordings Zimmerman?s wife, who testified at his bond hearing, called him from a credit union where she had an account linked to the ?Real George Zimmerman? Pay Pal account, which at the time had about $130,000 in it. Prosecutors contend that she was ?intimately involved in the deposit and transfer of funds and money into various accounts.?

Also at Friday's hearing, news organizations appeared before the judge to argue for access to witness names and Zimmerman's statements to police officers.? The names and statements are considered public records under Florida law, but both Zimmerman's counsel and the prosecutors have asked the court to seal the information.? The records reportedly show Zimmerman making inconsistent statements about the night he shot Trayvon.?

Slingshot-driven device stops high-velocity projectiles without destroying them

ScienceDaily (May 31, 2012) ? What do you get when you combine a slingshot, a fish tank, a stack of 2-by-4s and five engineering students determined to help the United States Air Force?

For Team CADET at Rice University, the answer is a device to stop high-velocity projectiles without destroying them. With the Air Force's current methods, artillery shells are destroyed beyond recovery. The Air Force wants to know more about their behavior as they accelerate and decelerate.

"The challenge was to simulate high-acceleration impacts in a nondestructive way," said Duncan Eddy, a junior in mechanical engineering and member of the Controllable Acceleration-Deceleration Equipment Tester design team. "The problem turned out to have a hands-on, mechanical engineering focus."

The other team members, Autumn Allen, Tremayne Kaseman, William Li and John Stretton, recently earned their degrees in mechanical engineering from Rice. Their adviser is Andrew Dick, assistant professor of mechanical engineering.

Currently, the Air Force simulates deceleration by firing cannons into walls. The strategy is expensive and the sensor module and target are typically destroyed in the process. Team CADET's goal was to sustain deceleration for at least 10 milliseconds, and without destruction. They machined a cylinder of aircraft-gauge aluminum and sealed a digital accelerometer inside. Next, they built a 14-foot wooden frame to hold a track fashioned from angle iron.

On one end, they attached a slingshot made from surgical tubing; on the other, above the track, they fitted a 20-gallon fish tank with transparent plastic. Into the bottom of the tank they drilled a line of 40 holes and sealed them with a removable rubber sheet.

When the cylinder holding the accelerometer is fired with the slingshot, reaching a maximum velocity of about 50 miles per hour, the sheet is pulled off and the water is released from the tank. The falling water slows the cylinder, and the rate of deceleration is measured and recorded on the digital device. The cylinder and its contents remain undamaged and the test can be repeated indefinitely.

"Nothing is destroyed. You just fill the tank with water again and reload the slingshot," said Eddy, who stressed that the prototype can be scaled to any size.

"We started last fall with a ton of different ideas but ended up with a plan that is simple and inexpensive, and the scale can easily be changed -- a bigger tank, more water, more holes, a longer track, a bigger slingshot," Eddy said.

In April, the team visited Eglin Air Force Base in Florida and met with members of the Munitions Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory, which commissioned the project. The team presented a video demonstration and PowerPoint explanation, and submitted their 65-page final report.

"They liked what they saw and said they were interested in exploring the idea further. We know we've created something entirely new. The parts are not new but the combination is. Also -- and this is important -- we came in under budget," Eddy said.
