The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation has received a $15,000 grant from the Horizon Foundation of New Jersey to provide depression intervention services for 10 economically disadvantaged Hispanic families who have a child diagnosed with?cancer.
In the spring, this statwide organization that is headquartered in Scotch Plains, began a program to provide depression prevention services and counseling to meet a growing need.
?In the past few years, we have had more and more Hispanic families coming to us for help, so we have tried to tailor our services to help Hispanic families," said Aimee Lam, the foundation's manager of development and communication. "When you are coping with an emotional situation such as a caring for a child with cancer, it is very hard to communicate in your second language."
Lam noted the foundation will use the grant money to retain the three bilingual case workers they currently employ. Because bilingual case workers are in such high demand, they require a certain salary to stay on staff, something the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation will now be able to supply, ensuring that Hispanic families get the advocacy and services they need. The grant money will also be used to help recruit volunteers or advertise for additional or replacement case workers if needed.
Joseph and Susan Vizzoni began the organization in 1983 after their son Emmanuel lost his battle with pediatric cancer. The Vizzonis wanted to help give other low and middle class Union County families the support they need at home to care for a child with cancer. Over the past 29 years, their organization has grown and now serves families across the Garden State.
?There is plenty of support for patients and families in the hospital but once you get home, families are very isolated and a lot of people don?t know that unless they have been through cancer themselves,? Lam said.
?Not only are you dealing with your own stress, but you have to comfort the fears of your child as well as the fears, resentment and anger a sibling may have. In the meantime, parents get so wrapped up with taking care of the child- driving back and forth to the hospital and dealing with treatments and side effects ? that it is hard to keep everything else together. ?Often times, parents will have to leave their jobs and financial burdens will start to mount,? Lam continued.
With their struggles in mind, the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation offers a number of services for these families, including counseling, social work and family advocacy.
The Foundation also has a food pantry at each regional center, collecting groceries and material goods. Food donations from the pantry are often delivered to homes so that a family does not have to take time away from their child to go grocery shopping.
?We also offer financial assistance for those who need it," Lam said. "We paid for a contractor to fix a leaky roof in a family?s house and found an air conditioner for a sick child who couldn?t withstand the hot summer. Last week we approved a check for a family that could not pay their rent that month because the parents had to stay home and care for their child. Now they can continue to stay in their home."
The Emmanuel Cancer Foundation also works tirelessly to find new ways to bring cheer to families coping with child cancer. Every other year, a free holiday party, sponsored by Party Express is hosted for those families. In October, an outdoor carnival and picnic, sponsored by Frito-Lay treated families to a day filled with carnival games and treats, face painting, dancing, entertainment and lunch.
Reflecting on these events, Lam encouraged all to volunteer and those who need help to contact the foundation.
??Families who have a child battling cancer are so isolated when they are at home and are a lot of times, so overwhelmed and stressed. We provide services to combat the issues families battling cancer deal with that are often overlooked. Although we are a 501 ?3 charity, we don?t receive any government funding. We are so grateful to Horizon and we encourage others to get involved and volunteer,? Lam said.
Volunteer opportunities abound for those young and old at the foundation in Scotch Plains. Lam stated that any organization, Girl Scout troop, school or family can hold a fundraiser to help support the foundation. Volunteers often help collect donations and wrap presents for birthday or holiday gift wish lists. Love is in the air for "Law & Order:?Special Victims Unit's" Det. Olivia Benson!
NBC has announced that actor and musician Harry Connick Jr. will be guest starring over multiple episodes as Executive Assistant District Attorney?David Haden beginning with the Jan. 18 episode.
"I'm really excited because I get to talk like an educated person," Connick joked in a taped message presented at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena Friday.
The video also revealed an intimate scene between him Mariska Hargitay's Benson.
As evidenced by the flirty clip (watch it below!), there?s a palpable chemistry between these two characters as their case and relationship develop.? We find it hard to believe the network would let him go.
"This is a home run on so many levels," Hargitay said. "?I think Olivia couldn't have asked for a better companion to take her through a new stage in her life and career."
But that wasn't all the juicy news to come out of the "SVU" session. Earlier reports of Hargitay scaling back, and perhaps even leaving the show, had viewers nervous about losing both longtime cop partners Benson and Elliot Stabler. Chris Meloni, who played Stabler, didn?t come to terms for a new contract and left the series last season.
When Connick asked Hargitay in the video message?if she'd be back on "SVU" next year, her response was a big ol' yes. "Oh, I'll be back! I can't leave this show," she said. "I'm having too much fun!"
"As long as there is a 'SVU,' Mariska will be on it," affirmed NBC entertainment honcho Bob Greenblatt.
Although the series hasn?t been officially picked up past this season, Greenblatt said it's a good possibility the series will go for another year.

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama is putting his personal stamp on a rejiggered Pentagon strategy for absorbing hundreds of billions of dollars in defense budget cuts, marking a turning point in U.S. security policy after a decade of war.
Obama planned to make a rare appearance in the Pentagon press briefing room Thursday to announce results of a strategy review that he ordered last spring. The aim was twofold: Streamline the military in an era of tighter budgets and reassess defense priorities in light of China's rise and other global changes.
Obama's decision to announce the results himself underscores the political dimension of Washington's debate over defense savings. The administration says smaller Pentagon budgets are a must but will not come at the cost of sapping the strength of a military in transition, even as it gets smaller.
In a presidential election year, the strategy gives Obama a rhetorical tool to defend his Pentagon budget-cutting choices. Republican contenders for the White House already have criticized Obama on a wide range of national security issues, including missile defense, Iran and planned reductions in ground forces.
Obama also wants the new strategy to represent a pivot point in his stewardship of defense policy, which has been burdened throughout his presidency by the wars he inherited and their drag on resources.
The revamped strategy, to be outlined at a news conference also attended by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and the Joint Chiefs chairman, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, is not expected to radically alter defense priorities. It may set the stage, however, for expected cutbacks in Europe and big weapons programs.
It also will move the U.S. further from its longstanding goal of being able to successfully fight two major regional wars ? like the 1991 Gulf War to evict Iraqi forces from Kuwait or a prospective ground war in Korea ? at the same time. This takes into account a bigger focus on immediate threats like cyber warfare and terrorism.
The administration and Congress already are trimming defense spending to reflect the closeout of the Iraq war and the drawdown in Afghanistan. The massive $662 billion defense budget planned for next year is $27 billion less than Obama wanted and $43 billion less than Congress gave the Pentagon this year.
White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said Wednesday that Obama was closely involved in the defense strategy review, meeting six times since September with top defense officials, including Panetta and Dempsey. Vietor said the review established priorities to ensure that defense spending cuts are "surgical."
As for Obama's decision to make a personal appearance at the Pentagon, Vietor said, "It's a sign of how personally engaged he is in this process and the level of importance he puts in shaping our priorities for the next decade."
Factors guiding the Obama administration's approach to reducing the defense budget are not limited to war-fighting strategy. They also include judgments about how to contain the growing cost of military health care, pay and retirement benefits. The administration is expected to form a commission to study the issue of retirement benefits, possibly led by a prominent retired military officer.
The administration is in the final stages of deciding specific cuts in the 2013 budget, which Obama will submit to Congress next month. The strategy to be announced by Panetta and Dempsey is meant to accommodate about $489 billion in defense cuts over the coming 10 years, as called for in a budget deal with Congress last summer. An additional $500 billion in cuts may be required starting in January 2013.
A prominent theme of the Pentagon's new strategy is expected to be what Panetta has called a renewed commitment to security in the Asia-Pacific region.
On a trip to Asia last fall, Panetta made clear that the region will be central to American security strategy.
"Today we are at a turning point after a decade of war," Panetta said in Japan. Al-Qaida is among a range of concerns that will keep the military busy, but as a traditional Pacific power the United States needs to build a wider and deeper network of alliances and partnerships in that region, he said.
"Most importantly, we have the opportunity to strengthen our presence in the Pacific ? and we will," he said.
The administration is not anticipating military conflict in Asia, but Panetta believes the U.S. got so bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan after 9/11 that it missed chances to improve its position in other regions.
China is a particular worry because of its economic dynamism and rapid defense buildup. A more immediate concern is Iran, not only for its threats to disrupt the flow of international oil but also for its nuclear ambitions.
Looming large over the defense budget debate is the prospect of reducing spending on nuclear weapons.
Thomas Collina, research director at the Arms Control Association, believes the U.S. nuclear program can cut $45 billion over the coming decade without weakening the force. He estimates that reducing the U.S. strategic nuclear submarine force from 12 subs to eight could save $27 billion over 10 years. A further $18 billion could be saved by delaying the building of a new fleet of nuclear-capable bomber aircraft, he says.
