Gelfandmania in Israel and the online Israel-Spain match

Gelfandmania in Israel and the online Israel-Spain match
27.06.2012 ? Gelfandmania has officially taken over Israel after Boris Gelfand's title run. He has appeared on TV, met the prime minister, given countless interviews and even been parodied by a famous comedy show. More importantly, he has sparked a huge interest in chess, leading to the match between Israeli and Spanish schools made possible through Playchess. GM Boris Alterman shares all.

The Show Goes On

By Boris Alterman

After his impressive attempt to wrest the world title from Vishy Anand, resulting in a draw in their classical match, Boris Gelfand has become a national hero in Israel. In fact, he is now a super star in Israel with numerous TV appearances, newspaper interviews, and meeting with the Prime Minister etc.

Recently Boris became even a more popular as a parody star in one of the most popular comic show on Israeli TV,"Eretz Nehederet".

This is how a satirized Gelfand looks - Click here for the actual episode

In fact, on the recent TV show "Dancing in with the Stars (Israel)", chess was one of the main items.

Israeli TV Channel 10 has also made a nice report about "chess in school program" in its Prime Time News:

Gelfandomania in Israel - "More and more schools and kindergartens in Israel include chess into their curriculum".

In this video you may see one of the most famous Savyon "Chess in school program"

Adi Tzimmerman, the Israeli Under 12 Girls Champion and product of the Savyon "chess in school program"?plays a?journalist, while beating him in just 3 min. We also see a heavily equipped computer room where kids study chess, solve puzzles, play and work with text books, and Grandmaster Boris Alterman explains the important role of chess in the education system.

There are many Russian emigrants who are still looking for a partner in the park and watching closely after Gelfand.

At the end of the video we see a school from Tel-Aviv Jaffa, where most of the kids are Israeli Arabs studying chess. One of the kids made a great impression on journalists when was asked about a game of chess.

"Is chess a quiet game?" - "It seems quiet but my mind is athletic!"

Israel beats Spain ? not in soccer but in chess!?

This year Savyon "Chess in school program" made its next move - On June 18 the first Internet match between two elementary schools took place, one from Savyon (Israel) and one from Salou (Spain).?Savyon's municipality is the small town near Tel-Aviv area with 3500 people. SHowing progressive thinking, it decided to include chess lessons into its education system as early as 2007. Savyon's Mayor Moshik Lipetz believes that chess improves dramatically the scoring level of the students, their mind skills.

Savyon's Mayor Moshik Lipetz

Kids study chess from the Kindergarten up to 3rd?grade, when many also participate in after school chess activities once a week, participating in the regional and national school championships.

The two teams met on the Playchess server with five players playing a double round match at 20min +10 sec increment.

The children from the Salou school in Spain smile for a picture of their online match

"All right Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up"

Grandmaster Arthur Kogan, captain of Salou team, with his class

GM Arthur Kogan reported:

We?lost the first round by 4.5-0.5, but in the second round?our youth nearly caused a sensation?(versus?experienced Israel's school!).

We began with two big wins and 2-0 scoring for Salou and ... a good advantage in the other games ... only at the last moment the advantage of experience helped?and Savyon?turned the tables and won all three games, so we lost by the minimal score 3-2?and an overall 7.5-2.5.

Players from both teams were?happy?and excited.?Bravo to all children of the Savyon School and School of Salou and thanks to the council and club members for helping make this wonderful initiative! Until next time!

The match was projected onto a screen so the children could follow

Of course, some preferred to just walk around

The children loved the idea and had a great time

This Hour: Latest North Carolina news, sports, business and entertainment

HEAT WAVE

Days of triple-digit heat heading to parts of NC

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Triple-digit heat is heading to North Carolina, and parts of the state may experience 100-degree temperatures for five days.

The National Weather Service says the high temperatures will move in Friday and could stay through Tuesday. The heat is the result of high pressure moving in from the Central Plains.

Most people can retreat to the air-conditioned indoors, but not everyone has that option. The Durham Rescue Mission is opening its doors not only to the homeless but also to people who don't have air-conditioning.

The N.C. Medical Society is watching the heat because part of its air-conditioning system is being replaced this weekend. Their workers will go home, but the contractor could still pull the plug on the project if it's unsafe for employees to be outside.

HEALTH CARE RULING-NC

NC lawmakers won't act on part of US health reform

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina lawmakers have no plans to meet a deadline to create a new one-stop shop to help individuals and small businesses find affordable health insurance despite a landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

State Senate leader Phil Berger said Thursday that senators do not intend to take up legislation this year to create a health benefit exchange. The 2010 federal health care overhaul requires all states to have an exchange. Legislation passed the state House last year.

State plans for the markets are due to the federal government by this fall. The federal government will create exchanges for states that don't have them by 2014. Only 14 states and Washington D.C. have adopted a plan for carrying out the law creating exchanges that steer middle-class households to private plans.

PERDUE-BUDGET

NC gov tries to get lawmakers moving on budget

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue is trying again to persuade Republican legislative leaders to negotiate with her so that changes for next year's North Carolina state budget will take effect on time.

Perdue said Thursday in a statement there is an additional $117 million in revenue this year available to use for public schools, to hire probation and parole officers and meet other needs.

The General Assembly sent last week sent Perdue budget adjustments for the year starting July 1. She has until Sunday to veto the bill or let it become law. She said the bill falls short in education spending.

Budget-writer and GOP Sen. Pete Brunstetter downplayed Perdue's statement as misleading. He says the extra revenue is largely a timing issue and North Carolina's financial picture is no better.

BUS HIJACKED-SENTENCE

Virginia man sentenced for NC bus hijacking

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Virginia man who pleaded guilty to hijacking a bus that was later stopped in North Carolina has been sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison.

Thirty-3-year-old Jose Darwin Flores of Arlington, Va., pleaded guilty earlier this year to violence against a mass transportation provider.

Flores was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Raleigh to 235 months in prison.

Prosecutors say Flores was arrested near Henderson in April 2011 after he allowed the bus Greyhound driver to stop at a gas station. Prosecutors say Flores had taken over the bus with a pellet gun shortly after it crossed into North Carolina on a Washington, D.C.-to-Miami route.

Flores tried to drive away from the gas station but was unable to disengage the emergency brake and was stopped by police.

JUVENILE SENTENCES-NC

NC legislators seek to comply with federal ruling

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina House members are trying to use the last days of the legislative session to comply with The U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down automatic life sentences without parole for youths convicted of murder.

A bill in the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday seeks to get North Carolina into compliance with the federal ruling. It would require minors convicted of murder to serve a 25-year minimum sentence before parole. North Carolina is 1 of the nearly 30 states that make life without parole the mandatory sentence for youths who commit certain types of murder.

Legislators say they want to tweak the law because of the 88 people in state prisons that the federal law would retroactively affect.

House members created a subcommittee to work on the idea this weekend.

SENATE-TOLL PROJECTS

NC DOT letters inquiry heading to ethics panel

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The flap over letters sent to legislators that appeared to reverse a high-ranking North Carolina Department of Transportation official's previous statements on two toll projects is heading to the State Ethics Commission.

The Senate Rules Committee voted along party lines Thursday to send the case to the ethics panel for further review.

Aides of Gov. Beverly Perdue edited letters sent under a transportation department executive's electronic signature to legislators before a key budget vote. The executive was out of pocket at the time of the edits and later disavowed the letters.

Rules Chairman Sen. Tom Apodaca of Hendersonville said it's time for the commission to evaluate whether the changes were designed to mislead the Senate.

Democrats on the committee said there's nothing to show anyone tried to deceive legislators.

Syria's Assad faces growing rebel, foreign threat

LONDON, June x (Reuters) - With a high profile attack on a government TV station, escalating fighting around Damascus and talk of increasing covert foreign support, Syria's rebels are bringing the fight ever closer to Bashar Al Assad.

In a speech on Tuesday night, Assad said the country was now "at war" and that all sectors of the government and country must devote their energies to the war effort. A string of recent military defections suggest even some of his supporters may have had enough, but most analysts and foreign officials believe his government could cling on well into 2013.

With the shooting down of a Turkish reconnaissance jet on Friday the latest sign of the creeping internationalization of the conflict, there are growing signs outside powers may be dragged in ever deeper whether they want to or not.

For now, few believe there is any imminent prospect of the kind of foreign military intervention seen last year to oust Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi. But one lesson from last year almost certainly does carry across, analysts say: that the true endgame, if it comes, will be in the capital.

In Libya, opposition fighters with smuggled and parachuted weapons and supported by Arab and Western special forces advisers swept into Tripoli often unchallenged. Such scenes in Syria, however, could still be a relatively long way away.

"Damascus is key - it's the place where you can cut the head off the snake," says David Hartwell, Middle East analyst at IHS Jane's. "The attack on the television station is obviously a new departure... but there have been attacks and uprisings in Damascus before that haven't led to anything. The question is whether they can continue it."

According to Syrian state media, opposition fighters stormed the compound of pro-government broadcaster Ikhbariya, located 20 km (15 miles) south of the capital, destroying a building and shooting dead three employees.

Tuesday also saw unprecedented levels of fighting elsewhere in Damascus suburbs including around the headquarters of the Republican Guard, although it appeared to ease again on Wednesday.

In principle, world powers remain committed to the diplomacy of former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. But some diplomats believe international talks on Syria scheduled for this weekend in Geneva may not even take place, so great are the divisions.

Despite western hopes that Russia might be persuaded to abandon long-time ally Assad, Moscow appears determined to back him - making it clear it intended to ensure delivery of several attack helicopters despite widespread condemnation.

At the same time, having initially held back, Western states and particularly Arab nations appear to be stepping up support for the rebels.

Turkey is allowing the Free Syrian Army safe haven within its territory. Following the jet incident it may well be willing to increase its own support and allow nations to do the same.

"My sense is that the (Turkish jet) shootdown certainly escalates regional tensions and increases the possibility over the horizon for (longer term) military intervention," said Mona Yacoubian, a former US State Department official and now Middle East adviser at Washington DC think tank the Stimson Centre.

INTERVENTION HUGELY DIFFICULT

Earlier this month, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said rather than looking for a Libya-style campaign, foreign powers should see Syria as more akin to 1990s Bosnia.

That, some including foreign office officials believe, was aimed at suggesting that regardless of intent, other states including Britain might ultimately be forced to become militarily engaged.

But a serious intervention could require tens of thousands of troops, comparable to the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. With Western states in particular exhausted by recent wars and economic woes, enthusiasm is limited.

The fact that a Turkish jet was blown from the sky with such apparent ease, experts warn, is a potent reminder of the risks.

Only the United States could inflict the kind of overwhelming assault on Syria's air defenses necessary to open the door for broader action. That could require two aircraft carriers and likely dozens or more other aircraft from Turkish, Cypriot and other bases, military sources say.

Syria's air defenses are far more powerful than the those of Gaddafi's Libya last year or Saddam Hussein's Iraq in 2003. U.S. air forces have not taken on such a task at least since Kosovo in 1999.

"It would be exceptionally difficult to establish a no-fly zone," said one Western military source on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak on the topic to the press.

"Any form of 'safe haven' would demand high end war fighting capabilities and a very large ground force - almost certainly beyond the capabilities of any potential interveners given recent cuts in defense spending."

The bulk of any ground force entering Syria would almost certainly have to come from Turkey - and that is a prospect that officials in Ankara are seen very keen to avoid.

While much of Gaddafi's military in Libya melted away in the early stages of the revolution, Syria's military is much more dominated by the Alawite minority and is seen likely to fight much harder including against any foreign forces.

If Assad were to fall or flee abroad, some analysts believe the country would simply collapse further into chaos. Foreign states could then be confronted not just by the danger of Al Qaeda-linked militants moving in but also the prospect of even more ethnic violence.

Without Assad, the Alawite minority in particular could find itself victim of revenge attacks following reported massacres in Sunni areas in recent weeks.

"The challenges surrounding Syria go well beyond Assad," says Aram Nerguizian, a visiting fellow and the Syria expert at Washington DC think tank the Centre For Strategic and International Studies.

"The post-colonial Syrian experiment is still coming undone... The long term socio-economic, political and sectarian challenges... could take years if not decades to play out."

GROWING COVERT SUPPORT?

Despite such longer-term worries, however, there are growing signs that the West and Arab states have decided that helping push the FSA towards victory may be the only option.

"I still don't think that Western powers will intervene," says Christopher Steinitz, Middle East analyst at the Centre for Naval Analysis outside Washington, part of the U.S. government-funded think tank CNA.

"No one will go it alone. Frankly, I think all parties at this point continue to see vague, covert support for the opposition as a winning strategy. There is no need for direct intervention."

Although official confirmation is inevitably absent, there has been growing talk of foreign special forces - particularly British, but perhaps also US, Qatari, French and others - operating in Turkey's border Hatay province.

On Tuesday, Israeli-based website Debkha suggested British special forces had actually entered Syrian territory proper, presumably alongside rebel forces. For now, most experts remain skeptical - but the prospect may well be growing.

Weapons deliveries to the rebels are also believed to be growing. Most needed, analysts say, would be anti-tank weaponry and perhaps also anti-aircraft missiles - despite worries that they could ultimately fall into the wrong hands.

"It's never going to be officially acknowledged, but I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA and special forces types haven't been operating in Hatay for some time," said Hartwell at IHS Jane's. "I wouldn't have thought they will be operating across the border. But they will be training, coordinating and poring over satellite photos. And after last week, I think the Turks will be a lot less bothered about keeping that secret."

"Mission creep" could prove almost inevitable. If Syria's rebels can emulate their Libyan counterparts and actually seize large areas of territory, they may similarly call for direct air support to hold back Assad's forces.

Accidental or deliberate cross-border firing and growing talk of potential Syrian support for Kurdish PKK guerrillas could drive the Turks to launch at least occasional military strikes, regardless of the actions of Western and Gulf states.

By early next year, whoever occupies the White House - either a re-elected Barack Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney - could find himself pushed ever closer to a larger military mission. But that, some warned, could bring with it much larger geopolitical risks.

At worst, as it backs governments in Bahrain and Yemen while opposing them in Syria and Iran, some believe Washington could find itself trapped on one side in a regional confrontation between Sunni and Shi' ite.

"Looking head to a 2013, when Assad is still very likely in power, the prospects of a broader, international military conflict over Syria are looming larger," wrote Ian Bremmer, president of political risk consultancy Eurasia Group.

RIM announces Q1 earnings: $518 million net loss, 5,000 job cuts, BB10 not due until Q1 2013

The last quarter has been about as rough as they come for RIM, and it's now detailed just how things stacked up in terms of hard numbers. For the first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, the company brought in $2.8 billion in revenue, down a full 33 percent from the prior quarter, while it reported a net loss of $518 million -- much worse than analysts were expecting. What's more, it's also announced that it's cutting an additional 5,000 jobs as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts, and that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones now won't launch until sometime in the first quarter of the 2013 calendar year (that includes a QWERTY model launched in "close proximity" to the touchscreen-only device). As for why, RIM only went as far as to say that the integration of some key BlackBerry 10 features and the "associated large volume of code" has "proven to be more time consuming than anticipated." For his part, though, CEO Thorsten Heins says he remains "confident that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones will provide a ground-breaking next generation smartphone user experience," and that he's "encouraged by the traction that the BlackBerry 10 platform is gaining with application developers and content partners." He further notes that the response to BB10 from key carrier partners has "been very positive."

In terms of its existing devices, RIM reports that BlackBerry smartphone shipments (not sales) for the quarter totaled 7.8 million, while there were about 260,000 PlayBooks shipped -- on the company's earnings call, Heins noted that the total BlackBerry subscriber base now stands at 78 million. Not surprisingly, the company is warning of more bad news to come. It says it expects the "next several quarters to continue to be very challenging," with everything from the "increasing competitive environment," lower handset volumes, impact from the BlackBerry 10 delay, and the company's plans to "continue to aggressively drive sales of BlackBerry 7 handheld devices" expected to cut into its bottom line. In another bit of news, the company also announced that it has appointed Steve Zipperstein, Verizon's former General Counsel, as its new Chief Legal Officer. You can find the full earnings report at the source link below.

My Story: Using Soccer to Teach Life Skills in Developing Countries ...

Brian travels the world and works with local NGOs to teach their coaches and players how to better use soccer for social development.

Brian travels the world and works with local NGOs to teach their coaches and players how to better use football for social development.

In the United States, sports are mostly for recreation and entertainment. They keep us healthy and also teach us basic lessons on teamwork, leadership, and fair play. But in many developing countries sport has a much greater value: education. More specifically, sports are being used to teach important life skills such as female empowerment, health & wellness (including HIV/AIDS behavioral change), conflict resolution, social inclusion, and financial literacy. NGOs (non-government organizations) exist worldwide and many of them use sports as a vehicle for social change.

I have the luxury of working with one such group, Coaches Across Continents. My full-time job is to travel the world (9+ months a year) working with local NGOs to teach their coaches and players how to better use football (soccer) for social development. In short, I get paid to travel the world and play football.

When I first volunteered in 2010 I?ll admit that I was a bit of a skeptic. How can playing football change behaviors and enact meaningful change in communities? The answer is quite simple. Sports are fun. People flock to play sports and are thoroughly engaged, sometimes not even realizing the lessons they are learning. At Coaches Across Continents, our award-winning curriculum focuses on always using a football. Our exercises must also involve laughter, even with our more serious topics of HIV/AIDS and conflict resolution. It is this element of fun that exists in sport which enables learning to happen.

Our football-based games create a specific environment where learning can occur. In our conflict resolution games, we create games that are designed to cause conflict and monitor the problem solving solutions that come out of them. In our female empowerment lessons we use games that highlight why it is essential that women play sports and foster respect between the genders. And in our HIV/AIDS games, we teach very serious behavioral lessons with footballs, laughter, and smiles to a populace who is still being ravaged by the disease. When our local partner coaches and players are exposed to this curriculum which all occurs on the field with a football, they cannot help but to learn and have fun which is essential for behavioral change.

Liberian amputees playing soccer.

Liberian amputees playing football.

Evidence of the success and power of sports are easy to find. In Kigoma, Tanzania there is a girl?s soccer league where just four years ago it was a struggle to get any girls to participate because of cultural traditions. In Monrovia, Liberia the African Champion National Amputee team is heading to this summer?s World Cup in Russia ? restoring a sense of belonging to a group of young men who lost limbs to landmines and civil war. And in Northern Uganda former child soldiers from Joseph Kony?s LRA are becoming life skills teachers using football to reintegrate into a society that is still healing from the atrocities that they themselves were forced to commit.

I have been lucky enough to work with our partner programs at all of these locations and see first-hand the power of football. My job is not a great job because of the travel or that I get to wear shorts and a t-shirt to my outside office every day. My job is terrific because I see the change occurring through sports. ?Brian Suskiewicz

Create Your Own Product Quickly And Painlessly | Make More Sales

Many marketers avoid product creation because they think it's long and involved and tough to do. We'll discuss a few tried and proven product creation tips so you can take part in this exciting process. Yes, it can be difficult to write about web business processes because you do not know how far to go with explaining everything. For example, if you are reading a tutorial on http://pageonecurator.com, then some amount of knowledge on that subject will be assumed to exist.

You or anybody else can get in trouble if you try to use that in your marketing without fully knowing what to expect or do.

We know you want to do well, so just keep in mind that even the following tips will not be all you need to know or should know. That is one aspect of internet business that we love; there is always something more that can be learned. On the other hand, nothing teaches quite as well as experience, and if you discover something is missing then you will get feedback in some way.

A great product creation tip is to consider your own hobbies, interests and passions. Many of the big online entrepreneurs found success by creating products that revolve around their own hobbies and interests. If you're going to create your own product, work on something that really interests you a lot. For example, if you're interested in "computer programming" and have given a good amount of time to it, it just goes on to show your passion towards it. One of the reasons some people don't succeed with product creation is because they try to make products that they aren't passionate about. However, you have to keep one important thing in mind before you actually jump into product creation and that is to find out if there is a demand for it. You might be really fascinated by your hobby, but there may not be a lot of call for products related to it online.

For instance, if your hobby is "stamp collecting", you can easily write an ebook about it. However, the question that arises here is whether there is a market for such ebook and whether people would spend money to actually buy it. It's important to find the right balance between your passion for a topic and how feasible it will be as a product. Once you know how to get both of these things in one place, there's no looking back. When you're already aware that your product will be potentially successful, it's easier to create. We tend to feel that anytime people are too hasty to consider using new approaches or ideas in their business that they are basically not allowing for maximum growth and revenue. You probably know that a great many will overlook or ignore this encouragement, but all that matters is what you will do or are willing to do. A great many people are far too cynical and skeptical about online marketing methods and maybe even http://guruproductblueprints.com - we do not know. You will always need to carefully assess anything new, though, and that means you have to base your decisions on research, first.

You probably are well aware of the dangers of skipping over checking things out. You know the old saying that most people who buy IM information never use it, and that can easily lead to knowing methods that you have never tried. Online marketers who are impatient or simply do not know are at the greatest risk. It can be frustrating for everybody, but for different reasons, because there are different situations and people can complain about a strategy that is actually good. It is just like locking your car every time you park it, maybe it will never prevent something but one day years from now it could. A membership site has many unique aspects to it, and yes - it can be a product, too. The thing about this kind of product is that there have been so many new products that support membership site creation that it makes them easy to do. A membership site is not looked upon in the same way as a regular website, or blog, and they do create an aura of respectability surrounding you. The members will have a strong feeling of being part of an inner circle, which would be exclusive in more than one way. As a membership site owner, you'll be able to constantly be in touch with your customers, provide value and build long term rapport with them. Also, think about a premium membership for specialty services - many things you can do with that idea. If you want to keep it for the long term, then always look for ways to improve and upgrade/update your content. Membership sites are obviously a continuity program, and some marketers earn excellent monthly revenue from them.

You can also work on adapting a product from one niche market to another. Let's use an example, try taking an article writing ebook that is for the IM crowd of people. So what you could maybe do with that is use the principles of ebook creation and create a brand new ebook about creating an ebook. The basic idea will be the same because you are dealing with writing in both ebooks. There are many approaches to product creation as you can easily see. Of course we all know that nothing is perfect or applicable for everyone, but for online marketing today's discussion has far-reaching implications. One thing is certain, though, and that is perhaps 99% of any kind of online venture can stand to have more promotional methods put to work. A lot of people can sometimes slip back into a lazier approach to their businesses if they are making solid profits and maybe begin outsourcing work, etc. The history of the net is full of all kinds of stories, and the dangers from getting lazy are very real and not to be taken lightly. Lots of people can take SocialCommissions.com and use it to make money, but only those people who want to truly succeed will not be content with one or two methods of promotion. A successful business will keep you occupied and filled with a positive purpose for as long as you care to stay in the game.

All in all, the product creation tips that we discussed in this article are just a tip of the ice berg. You'll begin to see what else is out there if you stay in the game and keep going.

Supreme Court ruling on Arizona law must lead to 'civil discourse' on illegal immigration

The Supreme Court ruling on Arizona law SB 1070 will let states help enforce federal immigration law through police checks on immigration status. This should create more federal-state cooperation in battling illegal immigration, especially in states hit hardest by such massive lawlessness.

A Supreme Court ruling on Arizona law SB 1070 puts a tight fence around a state?s ability to deal with illegal immigrants. But while asserting a preeminent federal role, the justices nonetheless gave some strong advice: The nation needs a ?searching, thoughtful rational civic discourse? about immigration.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Indeed serious political discourse on this topic has been lacking even as many states experience an unfair and costly burden because of lapse federal enforcement.

Now with this court decision, Washington must work more closely with the states and carefully tailor a joint responsibility for each state?s particular needs on immigration.

The court upholds the key part of Arizona law SB 1070 ? one that mandates police check the immigration status of someone on suspicion of being in the United States illegally if the person is stopped for another reason.

If all states can now pass such a provision, that will help create more transparency about the extent of illegal immigration ? as well as reveal how often the federal government simply looks the other way in upholding the immigration laws.

The nation needs more openness and accountability about this federal discretion. That will improve the ?civic discourse? and possibly lead to a consensus on how to deal with the 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the US.

The justices left open the possibility that they may restrict a state?s ability to detain someone over immigration status if such detentions are too long. Such an approach reflects the court?s view that states must defer to the power of Congress in setting national immigration policy.

Such deference is difficult, however, for those states hit hard by the high costs of illegal immigrants. The court noted, for example, that unauthorized immigrants make up 8.9 percent of the population of Arizona?s Maricopa County (which includes Phoenix) while being responsible for 21.8 percent of felonies in the county.

Yet the court decided that states cannot impose special actions against either illegal immigrants or employers who hire them.

The uneven impact of illegal migrants across the US requires more federal attention. States cannot be left unprotected in the face of such massive lawbreaking that challenges a state?s ability to govern. Road signs in parts of Arizona, for example, now read: ?DANGER ? PUBLIC WARNING ? TRAVEL NOT RECOMMENDED / Active Drug and Human Smuggling Area.?

At least for the time being, the court will allow greater arrest authority for states on immigration ? although deportation is left up to the federal government. With the legal lines more clearly drawn, Washington must expand enforcement while also welcoming states to join the national effort at defending the border and enforcing immigration laws.

Discourse, after all, is a two-way street.

Clustering of health behaviours in adult survivors of childhood cancer and the general population.

Source

Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine, Swiss Childhood Cancer Registry, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

Abstract

Background:Little is known about engagement in multiple health behaviours in childhood cancer survivors. Methods:Using latent class analysis, we identified health behaviour patterns in 835 adult survivors of childhood cancer (age 20-35 years) and 1670 age- and sex-matched controls from the general population. Behaviour groups were determined from replies to questions on smoking, drinking, cannabis use, sporting activities, diet, sun protection and skin examination. Results:The model identified four health behaviour patterns: 'risk-avoidance', with a generally healthy behaviour; 'moderate drinking', with higher levels of sporting activities, but moderate alcohol-consumption; 'risk-taking', engaging in several risk behaviours; and 'smoking', smoking but not drinking. Similar proportions of survivors and controls fell into the 'risk-avoiding' (42% vs 44%) and the 'risk-taking' cluster (14% vs 12%), but more survivors were in the 'moderate drinking' (39% vs 28%) and fewer in the 'smoking' cluster (5% vs 16%). Determinants of health behaviour clusters were gender, migration background, income and therapy. Conclusion:A comparable proportion of childhood cancer survivors as in the general population engage in multiple health-compromising behaviours. Because of increased vulnerability of survivors, multiple risk behaviours should be addressed in targeted health interventions.British Journal of Cancer advance online publication, 21 June 2012; doi:10.1038/bjc.2012.250 www.bjcancer.com.

Predicting treatment response in central nervous system diseases: Simple way of avoiding dangerous side effects?

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? The commonly-used epilepsy drug, valproic acid (VPA), can have a highly beneficial effect on some babies born with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the number one genetic killer during early infancy. But in about two-thirds of such cases it is either damaging or simply has no effect. Now, for the first time, researchers have found a way to identify which patients are likely to respond well to VPA prior to starting treatment. Their results have major implications, not just for SMA patients, but for other conditions treated with the drug such as migraine and epilepsy, and may even provide the conditions for turning VPA non-responders into responders, the researchers say.

Dr. Lutz Garbes, from the Institute of Human Genetics, University of Cologne, Germany, will tell the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics on June 24 that he and his colleagues had analysed blood RNA samples from a small group of SMA patients who had been treated with VPA. They found, as expected, that only about one third of patients responded well. In an attempt to discover whether blood sampling was the most appropriate test method to use, they also looked at VPA response in another tissue -- fibroblasts (a type of skin cell). They found that the response in blood and in skin was the same in 60% of cases.

The researchers then generated pluripotent stem cells from fibroblasts of both a VPA responder and a non-responder, and differentiated them into GABAergic neurons (neurons that produce the amino acid GABA, the chief neurotransmitter in the mammalian nervous system). These neurons, when treated with VPA, exhibited a similar response to that previously found in blood and fibroblasts.

"This indicates for the first time that response to VPA is the same among blood and skin and suggests that monitoring blood for VPA therapy is indeed feasible in central nervous system diseases," says Dr. Garbes. "But, even more importantly, by using the SMA patients' fibroblasts we were able to identify a decisive factor in the suppression of the positive response to VPA treatment. Utilising transcriptome-wide microarray profiling*, we found that high levels of the fatty acid transporter protein CD36 are associated with the lack of positive response to treatment.

"The implications of this discovery are far-reaching. First, we have been able to prove that monitoring blood is a reliable method for doctors to determine response to VPA treatment in many central nervous system diseases, since our findings are not specific to SMA. Second, the identification of CD36 as the crucial factor in suppressing response to treatment provides a simple way of appraising whether a patient will respond to therapy before treatment starts. And third, in the long run we may find a way to target CD36 in order to be able to change a non-VPA responder into a responder."

Knowing that CD36 is a crucial factor here means that the current, potentially dangerous, 'trial and error' approach to VPA treatment is now obsolete, the researchers say. Screening of patients for CD36 prior to treatment would mean that only those who would respond positively to VPA would be given it. This is important because, in some cases, VPA can cause life-threatening side-effects such as impairment of liver, blood cell and pancreatic function, especially in those just starting the treatment. "But we still do not understand how CD36 suppresses response to VPA, only that it does so," says Dr. Garbes. "A greater understanding of its effects could also lead to the detection of even better targets to overcome the problem. "

In the case of SMA, VPA works by inhibiting enzymes called histone deacetylase (HDACs) which are involved in regulating the packaging of DNA. HDACs lead to a denser DNA packaging whereby protein production from genes is reduced. Other enzymes called histone acetyltransferases (HATs) lead to a more relaxed DNA structure, producing more protein. By inhibiting HDACs with VPA, the DNA packaging balance shifts towards the more relaxed structure and thus genes get activated and proteins produced. In SMA, the crucial gene is SMN2, a copy gene of the disease-determining gene SMN1. In healthy individuals, SMN1 is the major source of SMN protein, but SMN2 cannot fully compensate for the loss of SMN1 in SMA patients. By increasing SMN2 activity, it will produce more SMN protein and ameliorate the condition.

"Avoiding needless VPA treatment of non-responders would have a major effect on healthcare costs and improve quality of life for patients," Dr. Garbes will say. "Half of the babies born with SMA will die within two years, but the other half can live to twenty or even longer, so this is an important finding for them. Our findings may also help identify patients who are candidates for VPA treatment in many other diseases of the central nervous system, some of them very common.

"In the EU, approximately 550 SMA babies are born each year, and there are about 311,000 new cases of epilepsy per year. It is estimated that, in Europe, migraine affects up to 28% of people at some time in their lives. We are happy that we may have been able to contribute to the development of personalised medicine for so many people," he will conclude.

*A transcriptome-wide microarray profile provides a way of identifying all the genes that are differentially expressed in distinct cell populations or subtypes, allowing the effects of treatment to be monitored.

EURO 2012 LIVE: Germany 1, Greece 0

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? In the second quarterfinal at Euro 2012, Germany plays Greece on Friday. Here's the best of the action and match-day excitement. All times are local to Poland.

___

2151: The players are out for the second half and Germany will get it underway. Two half time changes for Greece, Fanis Gekas and Giorgis Fotakis for Ninis and Tzavellas.

___

2137: The statistics don't lie: Germany had 70 percent of possession in the first half. And look at this: Passes completed by the Germans ? 344. Greece? 78. Germany has the lead and the mystery is how it is only by one goal. They have been by far the better side, dominating from the very first minute and have created numerous chances.

___

HALF-TIME: Germany 1, Greece 0.

___

2130: Germany continues its dominance as it looks to double its lead before half time. Schuerrle cuts in from the left and tries to curl a shot goalwards, but his attempt is deflected out for a corner, which Greece manages to clear.

___

2128: It's a fantastic goal from Lahm, but Greece's defending here is abject to say the least. He receives the ball on the left from Khedira and chests the ball down, skips forward and releases a swerving, dipping shot from outside the penalty area into the far corner of the net. Siafkis got a fingertip to it, but the shot was too powerful for him to push it round the post. The Greeks are punished for standing off the left back and Germany deservedly has the lead.

___

2124: GOAL! Germany 1, Greece 0 (Lahm).

___

2119: Germany coach Joachim Loew looks furious on the sideline at how wasteful his side has been so far, after Reus fires another effort wide from the edge of the penalty area. Is he worried that his decision to drop Podolski, Gomez and Mueller will come back to haunt him?

___

2111: This could be a long night for the Greeks. They're pinned back in their half and the Germans are coming forward in waves but just can't hit the target. Klose comes very close to scoring but can't quite stretch far enough to connect with a cross right in front of goal. Merkel, in the stands, has her hands over her mouth looking at that latest missed chance.

___

2105: gdunbarap: Torrential rain this morning in Gdansk and most seems to have fallen in the Greece penalty area. Slippery and cutting up badly (via Twitter).

___

2102: Giorgos Samaras has become the first player to be shown a yellow card tonight after three robust challenges. He ploughed through Khedira twice before clipping the ankle of Schweinsteiger, and he is eventually booked by the referee with the German captain down and in pain.

___

2059: Reus now goes close for Germany. Khedira picks out his forward with a neat first-time through ball and Reus lets fly with a left-footed shot, but drags it wide of the near post.

___

2053: The ball is in the back of the net already for Germany, but Klose's effort is ruled out for offside. Khedira hits a low shot at goal from far out and Sofakis spills it out to the midfielder running into the area in anticipation of a mistake, but the flag is raised as the German captain pokes the ball in. Sofakis got clattered as he tried to claim the ball back and is down for a few minutes, but will be OK to continue. Very bright start from Germany, who are passing the ball around nicely.

___

2045: And they're underway. Both sets of fans respectfully listen to the national anthems. Tension? What tension?

___

2035: Derek Gatopoulos, AP's reporter with the Greek team: "The Greek fans were first to appear in force, a block of about 500 arrived chanting 'Hellas, Hellas'. The atmosphere is overwhelmingly friendly. Again, many Greek fans appear to have traveled from Germany and there were loud boos from them as the German players ran onto the pitch to warm up. They unfurled a giant flag but it was upside down, so they rolled it back up again."

___

1955: German coach Joachim Loew must be confident of getting a result tonight! He's dropped his three main forwards, including leading striker Mario Gomez who is replaced by veteran Miroslav Klose. Loew also drops Lukas Podolski and Thomas Mueller, giving Andre Schuerrle and Marco Reus their first starts at the tournament. A fourth change sees Jerome Boateng return as right back after serving a one-match suspension, with Lars Bender returning to the bench.

___

1950: Tonight's teams:

Germany: Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Holger Badstuber, Phillipp Lahm, Sami Khedira, Bastian Schweinstiger, Mesut Ozil, Andre Schuerrle, Marco Reus, Miroslav Klose.

Greece: Michalis Sifakis, Giannis Maniatis, Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Vasilis Torosidis, Giorgos Tzavellas, Konstantinos Katsouranis, Grigoris Makos, Sotiris Ninis, Dimitrios Salpingidis, Georgios Samaras.

___

1930: German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be in the stadium tonight, sitting next to UEFA chief Michel Platini. I wonder how the Greek fans will react when her image is ? inevitably ? beamed up onto the big screen. The new prime minister of Greece, Antonis Samaras, won't be traveling. "The prime minister is a football fanatic and will be watching the game on television," government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said. He is also due to undergo eye surgery on Saturday.

___

1900: Less than two hours to go until the most politically-charged match of Euro 2012 ? and it couldn't have been scripted better. Greece, whose economy has imploded, is up against Germany, which has insisted on deep austerity cuts in return for bailout funds. So much to play for tonight in terms of national pride. The Germans are overwhelming favorites, but the Greeks will be raring to go.

___

1845: There is a huge German contingent in Gdansk, but the Greeks are making some serious noise. And the build-up to the match has been peaceful and vibrant around the city.

___

1830: The Berlin Morgenpost runs the headline: "Dear Greeks, we're not helping you today!" Inside, there's a cartoon showing a Greek player wearing a German shirt with Germany written across the chest, saying "We're Greece - They're just our sponsors."

___

1820: In Germany, the best-selling daily Bild led with: "Bye bye Greece; we can't rescue you today."

1815: The Greek press is in overdrive for tonight's match. Sports paper 'Derby' shows an ancient Greek warrior clad in full armor and clutching a spear in mid-stride as if charging at the reader, with the headline 'Molon Lave' meaning 'Come and Take it' ? Spartan king Leonidas' famous retort to Xerxes' call to surrender in the battle of Thermopylae.

1800: From AP's Graham Dunbar in Gdansk: "On Friday, thousands of fans from the two nations at opposite ends of the Eurozone financial crisis are converging on neutral Polish turf for a European Championship quarterfinal match. For Greece fans, Friday's clash in rainy Gdansk inevitably mixes sports and politics, Euro 2012 and the euro currency. They seek respect for their country after its humiliating economic collapse ? and the German government's role in imposing austerity measures."

It's been written many times before, but Lindsay Lohan just can't seem to catch a break. The latest hiccup for the problem-plagued actress involves an on-set investigation of "Liz & Dick," the Lifetime movie in which Lohan is playing a young Elizabeth Taylor.

According to the Wrap, the production is currently under investigation by the labor organizations International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and the actors' union SAG-AFTRA, after multiple reports surfaced of both the cast and crew suffering from exhaustion. One of those reports stemmed from Lohan being found unconscious in her hotel room and rushed to the hospital last Friday (June 15).

"The IATSE is on top of the situation on the set of Lifetime's 'Liz & Dick.' We have had union representatives on the set since last Friday and will continue to monitor the hours and working conditions there," IATSE division director of motion picture and television Mike Miller told the Wrap. "We take very seriously the safety and wellbeing of our crews, and are dedicated to seeing that they are protected from hazardous working conditions."

A spokeswoman for SAG-AFTRA issued a similar statement about investigating the working conditions on the film's set.

"We have thoroughly investigated this matter and our business representatives have visited, and will continue to visit, the set of 'Liz & Dick,' " the SAG-AFTRA rep said. "We have spoken with representatives from the company and they are fully aware of their contractual obligations. We will ensure that all applicable penalties will be paid."

Lohan seemed to make light of the situation via Twitter on Saturday when she issued a very public "note to self."

"Note to self. After working 85hours in 4days, and being up all night shooting, be very aware that you might pass out from exhaustion & 7 paramedics MIGHT show up @ your door," she tweeted. "Hopefully theyre cute. Otherwise it would be a real let down."
