DETROIT (AP) ? A World War II veteran said nobody helped him in the minutes after he was attacked and carjacked during daylight at a busy Detroit gas station and he had to crawl across a concrete parking lot to get help.
A roughly four-minute surveillance video shows 86-year-old Aaron Brantley struggling to get from the fuel pump to the gas station's door as people walked and drove by him Wednesday morning. The video was first obtained by the Detroit Free Press.
Brantley told The Associated Press said several people passed by him as he crawled, unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack. The carjacker knocked Brantley down, took his keys and drove off in his car about 10:40 a.m.
"I was trying to go in ... and see if somebody could call the police and an ambulance because I couldn't stand. I had to crawl ? I tried two or three times to get up," Brantley said Saturday. He said he was on way home from Bible study when he stopped to put gas in his 2010 Chrysler 200, which he recently bought to replace another car that had been stolen.
"People were passing me just like I wasn't there. ... I was crawling and they just walk by me like I'm not there," he said.
Brantley said as he approached the building, he asked a woman to open the door for him. He said at first it appeared she wasn't going to but she did and then kept walking. He found it distressing that nobody helped him.
"Any time a person is crawling on the ground, you know something happened to them," Brantley said.
Station manager Haissam Jaber said he didn't see the attack but called 911 after a customer alerted him. As Brantley sat on rock salt, waiting for an ambulance to come, he offered money to a stranger to drive him to his house a few blocks away. The customer refused the money and drove Brantley home, where an ambulance took him to the hospital.
Jaber said he also gave police another surveillance video from just before the carjacking that shows Brantley coming in to pay the cashier. A man looked at Brantley and left without buying anything, then headed in the direction from which the carjacker approached Brantley and his car, Jaber said.
Jaber said violent crime isn't common at the gas station, which is next to the University of Detroit Mercy campus. He said there was a carjacking about four months ago, but it happened at 1 a.m. and nobody was attacked.
Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said Saturday there have been no arrests in the case. The Free Press reported that a man later found Brantley's phone number in his Bible on the stolen car's front seat and called him. The car had been abandoned hours later and a few miles away with its wheels and radio missing.
Brantley, who said he has eight children and chuckled after adding "about 18 grandchildren," said people wonder how he can maintain a sense of humor after his experience.
"I'm just glad I'm still living," said Brantley, who retired after a 31-year career at Chrysler as a welder. "Nowadays, people are doing away with you when they do things like that."

MOGADISHU, Somalia, February 20, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ ? The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) condemns latest moves contemplated to stifle and control freedom of expression, freedom of information and independent broadcasting following the announcement of completion of Somali telecommunications and broadcast media bill by the Ministry of Information, Telecommunications and Posts of Transitional Federal Government (TFG).

NUSOJ reveals that the process was not inclusive or sufficiently consultative and expresses its fears that the resultant legislation will be used to undermine independent broadcasting, disrespecting editorial independence, pluralism of broadcasting organisations, intercepting communication and hindering free follow of communication and information to the people of Somalia.
?
The union views the secretive appointment of a consultant by a UK based company, Albany Associates with the use of UN funds, at the request of the Minister of Information, Telecommunications and Posts as lacking transparency and validates the efforts to manipulate and produce repressive regulations that will have long-lasting, serious and negative impact on freedom of expression in Somalia. Moreover, a number of key stakeholders from the telecommunications and media sectors were not invited to make input in this critical process but only handpicked individuals to ?rubber stamp? the process.

?We are of the view that the consultative process has not been inclusive and transparent and that there may have been a scheme to deliberately make the regulation a means of government control over communications and independent broadcasting,? said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. ?We believe that this is an approach of exerting government control over the private broadcast sector?.
?
While the Ministry of Information fails to take forward the reformed draft media bill, and continues to arrange repressive attacks on journalists and their organizations, the Ministry hurriedly goes for a process, which is meant, to specifically impose excessively harsh and severe regimes for the regulation of thriving private media broadcasting sector of Somalia.
?
The Ministry foresees to establish a commission, which is feared to be tightly controlled and highly politicized institution. Broadcast media and journalists see that the Ministry wants to have a stranglehold on the medium that serves as the primary source of news and information to the majority of Somalis.
?
One senior official at the Ministry of Information, Telecommunications and Posts informed NUSOJ on condition of anonymity that the regulation is meant to ?censor the content of broadcast media?.
?
?This is a clear fight to weaken existence of a wide range of independent broadcasters and programming that represents and reflects Somali society as a whole,? added Osman.
?
The Ministry of Information, Posts and Telecommunications of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) announced that the communications ?law? for the Somali telecommunications and broadcasting industry had been ?finalized? after a two day consultative meeting.
?
?Developing a stringent law in a mysterious manner demonstrates efforts to subject private broadcast media to a considerable political interference and censorship,? added Osman.
?
?NUSOJ maintains that there has been no such ?broad consultation of the relevant stakeholders? as claimed by the Ministry, its funder and warns that the process is meant to undermine independent broadcasting and make it susceptible to government interferences? declared Osman.

NUSOJ expresses complete disapproval of efforts to put resources into development of regulation meant to curb media freedom, freedom of expression and free flow of information. The union will pursue organized and active campaign against the proposed repressive regulation.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia Science is about facts, but the science of sustainability also involves questions underpinned by values.
With this in mind, a Michigan State University environmental sociologist will ask scientists to consider how art can provoke people to consider their perceptions of sustainability at this year's annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
"Good decisions about the complex issues of sustainability have to be grounded in science, but science alone isn't sufficient to make decisions that also involve our values and ethical concerns," said Thomas Dietz, MSU assistant vice president for environmental research. "We have to think about things that aren't usually part of our everyday routines, and challenging routine thinking has been one of the roles of art in our society."
Dietz, a member of MSU's Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, and Eugene Rosa, Boeing Distinguished Professor of Environmental Sociology and affiliated professor of fine arts at Washington State University, have organized a symposium, "Science, Sustainability and the Arts" at 8 a.m. on Feb. 17.
Symposium speakers are Joe Zammit-Lucia, fine art photographer, Sacha Kagan, sociologist at Leuphana University who studies how art affects people's understanding of sustainability, and David Maggs, classical concert pianist.
Zammit-Lucia's large-format portraits of apes, tigers and elephants have changed perceptions of the animals, helping people see them as more familiar and less alien. Kagan's installations, films and performance art focus on the culture of sustainability and how art can help achieve sustainability. Maggs is keenly interested in how his art can further his environmental concerns and helped create Earth To Human, an eco-travel project in Newfoundland that he also hosts.
"All the speakers are working artists who also are studying sustainability science," Dietz said. "We're hoping people come away from the session realizing that art doesn't have only aesthetic worth. Art can provoke thinking and actually change people's perceptions of the complex issues associated with sustainability science. When we're considering questions about preserving biodiversity versus creating jobs, art can help us examine our values and have a discussion that's broader than just scientific facts."

More than half of consumers say they are committed to their
bank, according to a recent survey from TD Bank. Moreover, nearly two-thirds
of those in a committed banking relationship also feel valued by
their financial institution in return.
However, if you?re among the few feeling as though you are in a
one-sided relationship, maybe your bank is ?just not that into
you.? Just as there are many fish in the sea, there is a banking
match out there for everyone, which can easily be found by simply
assessing your personal finance needs.
Feel the love
The first step to achieving a healthy relationship with your
bank is to determine what you need to suit your lifestyle and what
?value? means to you.
?Similar to personal relationships, the best banking
relationships are built upon trust and knowing that your partner
will be there when you need them,? says John Rosenfeld, head of
retail deposits for TD Bank. For some, feeling the love from your
bank can be as simple as feeling the banking staff is there for
you.
Studies have shown that the majority of consumers say helpful
staff and personal service make them feel valued. If you are in the
same boat, look for financial institutions that offer customer
service beyond a teller. Look for banks that value your needs by
offering 24/7, 365-days-a-year call centers with real people on the
other end, are open when you want them to be and can even chat with
you on Twitter.
Love don?t cost a thing
According to Rosenfeld, perhaps the single most important step a
person can take in determining their perfect banking connection is
deciding on a checking account. Nearly two-thirds of respondents to
the TD Bank poll noted that no monthly checking fees and low
minimum balances are the top ways their bank shows its
commitment.
Contrary to popular belief, new versions of checking accounts
with perks like low to no fees, access to a vast network of ATMs
and even no-fee instant issue debit cards are still available.
According to a Bankrate survey, the average minimum checking
balance to avoid a monthly fee rose from $249 to $585 last year.
Some banks have minimum balance requirements as low as $100 to
avoid charges and you still get a great checking account with lots
of benefits. Avoid getting locked in to leaving huge balances just
to avoid a fee.
Always there for you
Aside from product and service offerings, it?s important that
your bank is available when and where you need it. Consider how
much access you need to a branch or ATM and if you prefer mobile
banking. According to the TD Bank poll, more than 50 percent of
respondents cited convenient banking locations and easy online
banking as key components to a bank showing a commitment to
customers.
Some banks have added fees for making in-person transactions
through tellers, while others include unlimited access to store
branches. Look for a bank with an extended network of ATMs and
mobile banking, allowing you quick and easy access to your
money.
Values and commitment are important things to share in any
relationship, including ones related to your finances. Whether you
are content in your banking relationship or if you are searching
for your perfect match, choosing a bank is about more than finding
a place to deposit money ? it?s about finding a bank that works
with your lifestyle.
